What African Importers Should Check Before Ordering
Most import problems in this trade are decided before the order is placed, not after the container arrives. Four things are worth verifying in writing before you pay a deposit.
1. The micron rating needs a test method. "5 micron" means very little on its own. A nominal 5 micron cartridge and an absolute 5 micron cartridge are different products, and the price difference is real. Ask which rating system applies and what the filtration efficiency is at that micron.
2. Ask for the material compliance documents, not the brochure. Food-grade claims should come with a food-contact declaration. For drinking water applications, NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certification for the relevant reduction claims matters more than any marketing line on the packaging.
3. Verify dimensions against the housings you already sell. End-cap configuration, outer diameter, inner diameter and length all have to match. A container of cartridges that will not seat in the local housings is a total loss, and it is the single most common import mistake in this category.
4. Benchmark the price against the specification, not against another quote. A quote that comes in 40% cheaper is usually a thinner media, a lower grade of polypropylene, or a nominal rating sold as absolute. Compare grams of media per cartridge, not just price per piece.
Landed Cost: What Actually Hits Your Invoice
FOB price is only the beginning. By the time a carton reaches your warehouse you have added freight, duty, VAT and clearing. Cartridges ship by volume rather than by weight, so the freight cost per piece depends far more on how tightly the cartons are packed than on their weight.

Cartridges usually attract a lower duty rate than complete machines, and in several countries water treatment media are treated more favourably than general merchandise. Check the HS classification your broker intends to use before the shipment leaves China — reclassification after arrival is slow and expensive.
Mixing Products in One Container
A first order rarely justifies a full container of a single SKU. The practical approach is to build a mixed load: PP melt blown and wound string cartridges for the volume sediment business, carbon block for the drinking water segment, and a smaller quantity of RO membranes for the projects that specify them.
Cartridges are light and palletise well, so a 20ft container typically carries a substantial first order. The economics improve fast — consolidating a mixed load into one shipment usually beats two partial shipments on both freight and clearing cost.

Three Mistakes That Cost Importers Money
Ordering on price alone. A cheaper cartridge that blinds in three weeks costs your customer more than a better one that lasts eight weeks — and you are the one who gets the phone call, not the factory.
Under-ordering the fast movers. PP melt blown and wound string cartridges are the consumable base of the business. Running out of them to make room for slow-moving RO membranes in the container is a poor trade.
Not planning the second order. Sea freight is 20-35 days. If you order when you run low rather than when you hit a reorder point, you will spend part of every cycle out of stock. Work out your monthly consumption, add the transit time, and set the reorder point there.
