And honestly, the answer is never the same for everyone. Your replacement schedule depends on your water quality, the type of cartridge you're using, your flow rate, and even the time of year. But that doesn't mean we can't give you solid guidelines to work with.

The #1 Way to Know When to Change: Pressure Drop

Forget the calendar. The most reliable indicator for sediment filters is pressure drop across the filter.

Here's how to use it:

  1. Install a pressure gauge before and after your filter housing (or use a differential pressure gauge).
  2. Record the initial pressure drop when you install a fresh cartridge. Write it down. For a 5-micron melt blown cartridge at typical flow, this might be 1–3 psi.
  3. Monitor as the cartridge loads. When the pressure drop increases by 10–15 psi above the initial reading, it's time to change.

For most industrial housings, the maximum recommended pressure drop is around 35–40 psi (or as specified by the housing manufacturer). Never exceed the housing's maximum operating pressure.

Other Signs It's Time to Change

Not everyone has pressure gauges installed. If you don't, watch for these signs:

1. Flow Rate Drops

If your faucets, spray nozzles, or process equipment are getting less water than normal, your filter cartridges are likely loaded. A 20–30% drop in flow rate compared to when the cartridges were new is a good indicator.

2. Visible Sediment in Treated Water

If you see particles in your water after filtration, your cartridge has broken through. Change immediately. This is the most obvious sign and means the filter's structure has been compromised.

3. Unusual Taste or Odor

For carbon block cartridges, if the water starts tasting or smelling like chlorine again, the carbon media is exhausted. For sediment cartridges, a musty or earthy taste can indicate bacterial growth inside the cartridge.

4. Pressure Fluctuations

If your system pressure fluctuates wildly, it could indicate intermittent cartridge loading or channeling — where water finds a path through a weak spot in the filter media.

5. Time — Even If Everything Looks Fine

Even if your water looks and tastes fine, change your cartridges at least once a year for sediment filters. Bacteria can grow slowly in any wet environment, and you can't always see or taste it. For carbon block cartridges, the media can become a breeding ground after 12 months regardless of usage.

  3. Calculate average life. After 3–4 changes, you'll have a solid average. Use that to plan inventory and budget.
  4. Watch for trends. If cartridge life is decreasing, something changed in your water supply. Investigate.
  5. Don't overspend on micron rating. Using a 1-micron cartridge when a 5-micron would do is expensive and shortens change intervals. Match the micron to your actual requirement.
